Just after 12 noon this afternoon ( Thursday ), ten Pac-12 officials, Chip Kelly and his Oregon Duck football team walked out of Autzen Stadium placing a bow on fall camp with a final scrimmage in full pads. While other position battles are at stake on the Ducks depth chart, the one at the forefront of today’s post practice press conference revolved around the quarterbacks. Who’s it going to be,….Bryan Bennett or Marcus Mariota?
As expected, the quarterback competition between redshirt sophomore Bryan Bennett and redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota comes down to one final scrimmage. On Thursday, Chip Kelly and his Oregon Ducks will hold their final organized scrimmage of fall camp before entering game week preparations for Arkansas State who the Ducks will face on September 1st.
There’s two days Oregon Duck football fans look forward to most. Certainly, opening day in Autzen Stadium is number one. And arguably a close second is the annual unveiling of the seasons new uniforms. It wasn’t that long ago when Duck fans were simply interested in a winning season. Now, fans can hardly wait for the debut of the new gear – specifically the jersey and pant combinations and the different helmets.
The wait is over. The Ducks football gear for 2012 was finally released on Wednesday under a tremendous cloud of secrecy and high expectations. What did we learn? Certainly Nike strives for comfort and innovation in it’s football uniforms. And that’s displayed in this seasons jerseys and pants. As for design, the shoulder pad / spider web design is new and interesting.
As for helmets, the liquid metal design returns for the 2012 season although there’s no word on colors just yet. Below are the newly released images of this years Duck football gear.
As the Oregon football team emerged from Tuesday’s practice session, players and coaches alike remain tightlipped about the offensive and defensive depth chart and primarily who the starting quarterback will be. If you ask Kirk Herbstreit and David Pollack of ESPN though, both said on Tuesday they believe redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota is the likely candidate and will emerge as the starter. That bit of news from Bristol certainly brought smiles to the face of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. ”Herbie’s actually going to set the depth chart for us” said Kelly to a laughing group of media during his post practice comments. ”When we put it out on Friday ( Depth Chart ), I’m going to call him first and find out who we should be playing and shouldn’t be playing.”
