In Part 2 of his weekly press briefing, Oregon head football coach Chip Kelly addresses a variety of issues surrounding Saturday’s match-up with the Stanford Cardinal.

Not many would argue Saturday’s game with No. 2 Oregon and No. 13 Stanford will have many of the nations television sets tuned to ABC at 5 pm ( pacific time ) simply to see if the Cardinal have an answer to knock off the top ranked Ducks.

That in itself has brought in ESPN’s Game Day Show which was one of the topics Kelly discussed with reporters this week.

“I think it’s good for the university,..and I think it’s good for the fans” said Kelly this week.    “I think it’s a positive for everyone involved in this.”

Because the Ducks were hit with the injury bug of late, a significant amount of questions revolved around the depth of Oregon’s defense and the coaching staffs mantra of “next man in”.

While Kelly says he feels bad for those injured players who aren’t able to finish a game,…or the season, he and his coaches are keenly aware of how important it is to move forward to make sure those further down the depth chart are ready to play and contribute.

“Our mentality about the next guy in is you just can’t sit there and feel sorry for them while the games going on” explained Kelly.

“If our mentality isn’t next man in then Avery wouldn’t have played as well as he did when he stepped in and was the next man in.”

Of course Kelly was referring to the season ending injury to safety John Boyett and how Avery Patterson was able to jump right into Boyetts position and contribute.
