A changing of the University of Oregon football guard was made Sunday afternoon.
As expected, offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich became Oregon’s 32nd head football coach taking over for Chip Kelly who left Oregon last week to coach the Philadelphia Eagles.
Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens made the announcement just after 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon at The Club in Autzen Stadium to a packed room of reporters, Duck football players, assistant coaches and boosters.
The announcement didn’t come as a shock to those who follow Oregon football. Most close to the program pegged Helfrich as the Ducks next coach last year when Kelly came close to leaving for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach when it was reported a succession plan to promote Helfrich was announced.
Helfrich becomes Oregon’s 2nd head coach in school history as a native Oregonian.
