Late Saturday evening, multiple sources began reporting current offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich will be named Oregon’s next head football coach replacing Chip Kelly who left last week to coach the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.com, the University of Oregon will officially name Helfrich as head coach on Sunday.

In addition to Helfrich being promoted to head coach, it’s also being reported wide receivers coach Scott Frost will be elevated to offensive coordinator.

Helfrich was long believed to be the leading candidate to take over for Kelly, especially after Kelly’s near departure last year to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

When rumors of Kelly’s pending departure began circulating again this season, Helfrich was again the primary target of Duck athletic director Rob Mullens, however an official interview process was mandated by the State of Oregon to satisfy the policy of interviewing minority candidates.

While Mullens and the University of Oregon did undertake the process of interviewing other candidates including Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, it was always believed Helfrich would receive the promotion to head coach to maintain the current culture of Oregon football that’s been in place since Chip Kelly took over four years ago.

Helfrich, a native of the State of Oregon, began his Oregon football career in 1997 as a graduate assistant under then head coach Mike Belotti.   Helfrich left the Ducks in 1998 making stops at Boise State, Arizona State and the University of Colorado as quarterbacks coach.

When Kelly was promoted to head coach at Oregon in 2009, Kelly brought Helfrich back to Oregon as the Ducks offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, a position he’s held for the last four seasons.

It’s also expected wide receivers coach Scott Frost will be promoted to Oregon’s offensive coordinator under Helfrich.

An official announcement is expected to be made on Sunday.
