University of Oregon wide receiver Devon Blackmon has informed Chip Kelly of his intentions to transfer from the football program, according to the Ducks’ fourth-year head coach.

The Fontana, Calif., redshirt freshman had stepped onto the field in two of the first three games this season but had yet to accumulate any statistics.

The 6-1, 186-pound Summit High School standout caught 31 passes for 379 yards and five touchdowns in addition to carrying the football 35 times for 370 yards and six more scores as a high school senior.

Blackmon was a Rivals.com four star recruit and was rated as the second best receiver in ESPN’s top 150 when he entered Oregon in the class of 2011.

Kelly said Blackmon is expected to complete the fall academic term before transferring but has been excused from his remaining football obligations.

“He has been a solid contributor to this football program for the last two seasons and I wish him continued success whatever he decides to pursue,” Kelly said.

According to coaches, Blackmon has mostly played on the Oregon scout team this season and has faced strong competition from the Ducks young group of talented wide receivers.

It’s likely Blackmon was struggling with trying to find playing time on this Oregon squad considering the Ducks have a lot of youth at that position and will return, Josh Huff, Keanon Lowe, B.J Kelly, Dwyane Stanford, Blake Stanton, Bralon Addison, Chance Allen, Eric Dungy and Daryle Hawkins in 2013.

Oregon also has four star WR recruit Darren Carrington ( Horizon HS – San Diego, Ca. 6’2 187 ) committed for 2013.

Blackmon will have three seasons of collegiate eligibility remaining.

There’s no official word where Blackmon intends to transfer.
