The University of Oregon and the Virginia Cavaliers have scheduled a home and home football series, that according to the Oregon football office Monday afternoon.

Having never met in football, the Ducks and Cavaliers will meet in 2013 and again in 2016.

The first meeting between the two schools will occur September 7th of this year when Oregon will travel to Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.

In 2016, Virginia will visit Eugene, although no date has been set.

According to the report, Penn State cancelled their game with Virginia on September 7th to schedule a home and home with the University of Central Florida leaving an open date for the Cavaliers.

Oregon had previously scheduled a travel date with Nevada on September 7th, however that game has now been dropped from the 2013 schedule in favor of Virginia, who’s a BCS automatic qualifier from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Nevada game has been re-scheduled into the 2019 season as a home game on September 7th.

It’s assumed both schools were interested in the upgrade of schedule, especially the Ducks after an extremely soft out of conference schedule in 2012.

For Virginia, adding a high profile team who’s been to four consecutive BCS bowl games and is considered one of the power house programs in college football, to its schedule adds luster for their fans and will certainly be featured in the 2013 national television schedule.

The Ducks on the other hand, have an opportunity to travel across the country and play on the road in a difficult environment with the opportunity to enhance their status as an early season favorite to reach a fifth BCS bowl.

“This will be a great early challenge for our team and one that will help prepare us for Pac-12 play,” said new Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich.

“A bicoastal regular season game is unique in college football and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Oregon’s three out of conference games now include a home date with Nicholls State on August 31st to open the 2013 schedule, on the road at Virginia on September 7th and a home date the following weekend ( September 14th ) with Tennessee.

The first Pac-12 contest for the Ducks will be September 28th when the Cal Bears visit Autzen Stadium.

Virginia was 4-8 overall in 2012, and 2-6 in the ACC.
