When the No. 2 Oregon Ducks travel to Los Angeles on Saturday to take on the No. 18 USC Trojans, much of the attention from the Duck defense will be focused on quarterback Matt Barkley and wide receivers Marquis Lee and Robert Woods.

Oregon safeties Avery Patterson and Brian Jackson have the difficult challenge of trying to contain this talented trio.

Patterson and Jackson are the last line of defense against speedsters Woods and Lee.   On Tuesday after practice, both safeties emphasized the importance of not biting on the play action pass from Barkley and allowing the deep ball to beat them.

“What we have to do is make sure we stay on top of the deep routes” explained Jackson after Tuesday’s workout.

“They really love to stretch downfield.  The approach of their offense is they’ll pound the ball and then they’ll hit us with a deep play action,..or they’ll come out and spread the field with four wides and come at us that way.”
