Life after former Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert was never expected to be easy.
And nor should it be. Herbert will go down in the Oregon football history books as one of the best ever to play that position.
In his senior year alone, Herbert led his team to a Pac-12 crown and Rose Bowl Championship. He also tossed 32 touchdowns and passed for more than 3,400 yards.
Life after Herbert will be a tough hill to climb, but there’s no doubt back-up and expected starter Tyler Shough is ready for the challenge.
“Obviously you can’t replace a guy like Justin Herbert and guys before him” explained Shough on Wednesday when asked about following in those gigantic footsteps.
“I’m just trying to be myself. I’m trying to be Tyler and make my own name and write my own story. I’m excited for what’s to come in the future and just really thankful we can have a season and get some time.”
While Shough will no doubt be fighting the ghosts of Herbert past, he’s also locked into a battle with grad transfer Anthony Brown who comes to Eugene with impressive credentials as a starter at Boston College.
Brown not only brings three plus years of starting experience to the quarterback room, but he also brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership into the position which no doubt will have an impact on Shough and the younger signal callers on the team.
“It’s obviously been the best thing for me and the quarterbacks” said Shough.
“He brings a level of maturity because he’s an older guy. He has a good understanding of football itself. He’s a great guy,…a great friend,…great teammate and overall he’s just a great addition to the team.
“I’m getting better because of it. It’s honestly been a great process and really thankful for it.”
