Rising to the occasion on Saturday in the Mercedes Benz Dome versus No. 3 Georgia won’t be a problem for Oregon safety Bennett Williams.
He did it last season against No. 3 Ohio State helping lead the Ducks to a win in the Horseshoe and he hopes to do that again on Saturday.
Williams thrives off of that mentality.
In fact, he embraces it.
“These are big games, right,” said Williams this week.
“You come in as the underdog. That always for me has been a,….I always embrace that mentality,…the underdog mentality. You rise to that occasion, but at the same time I think with this defense and maybe something we didn’t do super well last year,…I’d say playing level every game,…improving every game and not just playing up to your competition. It can’t be just this game that we get up for and be really hyped for this game and then the next week take it easy. We have to treat every opponent the same and play our brand of football”
Williams will certainly have to rise to the occasion and play his best game if the Ducks are to have any chance of winning.
One of the key hurdles for Williams and the entire Ducks secondary is being able to limit Bulldog TE Brock Bowers. Bowers, who stands at 6’4 and 240 lbs, has shown he can run with most DB’s and has incredibly soft hands to make any difficult catch.
“He’s definitely a special player,” said Williams.
“Size, speed, hands,…can block,…has finesse. He’s definitely a good player. But, I feel like we’ve good really good players. I feel like we have the guys and the scheme to,…I don’t want to say completely negate it,…or shut it down, but at least limit it, right,….and work into our game plan to win this game.”
Williams has only played in 12 games over the last two seasons. During last season’s win against Ohio State Williams left the game with a leg injury that kept him out of action until the Valero Alamo Bowl last December.
In those 12 games, Williams has logged 3 interceptions along with 1 touchdown. He’s also been credited with 25 solo tackles, ( 4 of those for a loss ), 1 sack and 5 passes broken up.
