HOW IT HAPPENED

From the very beginning, Oregon showed its size and speed on both sides of the ball allowing Portland State to score just just seven points in the game. On their second possession of the game and at the 7:01 mark of the first quarter, the Vikings drove 75 yards in 9 plays to score on a 9-yard pass play from Dante Cachere to Chase Miller to trail the Ducks 8-7. That’s the closest Portland State would get as the Ducks cruised to an 81-7 victory.

That single PSU drive gave the Ducks defense pause, but it was a very short pause as the Oregon defense held PSU scoreless the rest of the way.

Oregon would go on to score eleven touchdowns – four of those through the air.

Bo Nix threw three aerial scores – two of those to Troy Frankin ( 13 & 32 yds ) and the third to Gary Bryant Jr, a 10-yard score on a slant pattern across the middle. The 10-yarder was Bryant Jr’s first touchdown as a Duck.

Nix ended his day early in the third quarter giving way to backup Ty Thompson. Nix completed 23 of 27 passes for 287 yards and his three passing TD’s.

Thompson got into the scoring book at the 9:56 mark of the 3rd quarter when he tossed a 21-yard pass to Bryant Jr to give the Ducks a 63-7 lead. It was Bryant Jr’s second TD catch of the game.

In the 4th quarter, Thompson gave way to third-stringer and true freshman QB Austin Novsad. Novosad looked solid and showed a command of the Duck’s offense going 3 of 3 for 13 yards.

The Ducks had a tremendous ground attack rushing for 381 yards and 7 touchdowns. Leading the way on the ground was Bucky Irving with 4 carries for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns in just two quarters of play.

True freshman Jayden Dowdell also showed great promise carrying the ball 10 times for 86 yards and 3 scores.
