Remember the Alamo!
Let’s hope the Ducks will remember this Alamo Bowl after facing Oklahoma on December 29th for a Pac-12 / Big 12 showdown with the Oklahoma Sooners.
It isn’t the bowl game Oregon was planning on for this post-season, but right now they’ll take it after once again getting pummeled in the Pac-12 Championship game in Las Vegas.
And certainly, on a brighter note, the Ducks will have a massive chance at redemption with the quality of opponent that’ll be waiting for them in the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas.
The invitation came Sunday afternoon from the Valero Alamo Bowl who selected No. 14 Oregon to match up with No. 16 Oklahoma. The game is scheduled to be played on Wednesday, December 29th and will air nationally on ESPN with a kickoff at 5:15 pm pacific time.
This wasn’t the game the Sooners were planning on playing either.
Oklahoma suffered two late-season losses which, like Oregon, dropped them out of any contention for the College Football Playoff.
Sound familiar?
Oregon (10-3) was also in prime position to be in the playoff, but two horrible losses to Utah, including in the Pac-12 title game, knocked the Ducks out of contention.
Oklahoma had won its first nine games but then lost to Baylor who eventually won the Big-12 Championship by downing Oklahoma State on Saturday.
After defeating Iowa State, the Sooners fell to their rivals Oklahoma State.
And then chaos ensued.
Head Coach Lincoln Riley shocked everyone in Norman, OK when he left the Sooners to take the USC job in Los Angeles.
In his place, Oklahoma has called upon longtime Sooner coach Bob Stoops to coach the bowl game only.
Whether the Ducks mirror the Sooners in coaching situations remains to be seen.
Mario Cristobal is rumored to be in talks with the Miami Hurricanes for their coaching job, although current Canes coach Manny Diaz hasn’t even been removed from his head coaching position yet.
With or without Cristobal, the Ducks will face a tough Sooner team that has one of the best young quarterbacks in college football in Caleb Williams.
Oregon has to hope this Alamo Bowl goes better than the last time the Ducks last appeared in this game.
It was another forgettable game and performance.
In the 2016 contest, Oregon held a 31-3 lead over TCU before eventually losing 47-41.
This will be the third time the Ducks have played in this Pac-12 / Big-12 match-up.
Oregon last won this game in 2013 when they downed the Texas Longhorns 31-7 which ended up being the last game Mack Brown would coach at Texas.
