When new co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Matt Powledge was hired on at Oregon, he already brought with him a plethora of defensive knowledge.
His toolbox was already stuffed with schemes and concepts he had learned and taught from other coaching stops like he did at Baylor.
But learning additional concepts under new head coach Dan Lanning has brought some new excitement to Powledge.
And its also generated new excitement in his on-field teaching to this current group of defensive Ducks.
“A lot of similarities” explained Powledge when asked Thursday about his coaching concepts and what he’s teaching now in Eugene.
“I think anytime you run a simulated pressure, obviously for us we feel like they’re very beneficial but you can do them out of different coverages. For us there’s a couple of coverages we majored in at Baylor.
Coach Lanning, same thing,…same coverages with the same simulated pressures that we ran, but also a quarter-quarter half concept with simulated pressures that we really didn’t explore at Baylor, so we’ve been able to brainstorm and bring a few things from there. But really learning a lot from what Coach Lanning did at Georgia as well, so it’s been awesome”
But how have these different coverages and pressures been accepted in the defensive backs room?
“Really well’ said Powledge.
“They’re very excited about it. Everybody kind of likes the sneak attack, right? That’s kind of how they look at it,…so you’re kind of hiding a lot of times. Maybe showing one thing, but you’re playing something else at the same time.
But they have the ability to blitz or rush that a lot of times other guys get to do,….potentially make a sack or a TFL. All of those things are exciting for them and they’ve enjoyed that part of the concepts we’ve been installing.”
