QUICKIE RECAP
Under pristine blue skies and an absolutely perfect day for football, Dan Lanning led his Ducks into their second spring game under his watch.
It wasn’t the offensive output you would expect considering the firepower Lanning and his Ducks have on their roster heading into the 2023 season. Combined both teams scored just five touchdowns and three field goals in the four quarters of play with the Green squad coming out on top 23-20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After going scoreless in the first 15 minutes of play, it was the Green team that jumped out on top first. QB Bo Nix drove his squad to the Yellow 28 yard line but wasn’t able to find the end zone leaving kicker Camden Lewis to knock in a 35 yarder to take a 3-0 lead.
With the first half running out, the Green team found the end zone for the first time with :54 seconds to play when Nix found receiver Troy Franklin on a nice 32 yard strike in the end zone to give the Green a 10-0 lead going into the half.
Early in the 3rd quarter, the Yellow squad found the end zone when QB Ty Thompson found transfer wideout Tez Johnson on a dig route. Johnson showed his speed and ability to break tackles and raced 63 yards for the score tightening the green lead to 10-7 with 11:24 remaining in the third.
Six minutes later the Yellow squad once again found the end zone when RB Jordan James carried the ball three yards for the score. The score was set up by a beautiful downfield strike from Thompson to WR Kris Hutson. The Yellow team took the lead for the first time at 14-10.
In the 4th quarter the Green team then went on a 13-0 run to take a 23-14 lead with two Camden Lewis field goals and a Bo Nix 11-yard keeper to seal the win.
As time ran out in the game, Ty Thompson found Kris Hutson once again on a nice crossing pattern to get the Yellow within three at 23-20 to end the game.
Bo Nix completed 19 of 40 attempts for 193 yards and 1 score.
Yellow squad QB Ty Thompson ended his day by completing 16 of 34 attempts for 274 yards and 1 score.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Even though the Yellow squad ended their day on the losing end, receiver Kris Hutson was certainly the bright spot offensively catching 5 balls for 143 yards and 1 score.
