( MONDAY MUSINGS ) DAN LANNING BREAKS DOWN UTAH AND LOOKS FORWARD TO CAL – “We’re a good time right now and really what you do in November that’s going to determine if we’re a great team”

One of the many coaching superlatives of Dan Lanning is his innate ability to self-scout and teach.

He’s a tireless thinker who consistently searches out teachable moments and uses those moments to make his team better.

That’s Dan Lanning in a nutshell.

Right now these Oregon Ducks are most certainly playing their best football of the season and that’s exactly where Lanning wants his team to be as they head down the stretch in the month of November.

But they wouldn’t be where they are today if it weren’t for Lanning’s tireless work ethic and his ability to reach his team and teach them.

“I told our players I think this is what we’re capable of” said Lanning when asked about the position his team finds themselves in after taking down a very tough Utah team on the road.

“Since this summer we’ve talked about the process of good to great. I’d say we’re good,…we’re a good team right now. And really what you do in November, that’s going to determine if we’re a great team.

“We want to play our best football at the end of the season. We’ve played our best football to date,…this last week. And we have to play better going forward so if we continue to grow I think that just shows what we’re capable of. We watched the film and said ‘Wow we could have played a lot better’ so that’s certainly a positive moving forward.”

There, in that film study moment, Lanning insisted to his team they could play better.

And they likely will because these Ducks believe in their head coach.

It’s those small teachable moments that are propelling this Oregon team to a championship-level team.

And the consistent message from Lanning that’s proving it’s getting through, is his message to simply focus on the next play.

“One of the biggest things we can do moving forward is focus on the next play because that’s the most important one” explained Lanning.

“Our guys have had great focus this year to be able to do that. I think we’ve had response on both sides of the ball in adversity because of our ability to reset and not worry about what happened in the past but what’s next.
